The launch of the new Samsung Galaxy S8 has finally taken place and it looks really impressive, despite the fact that a great many and accurate enough rumors have already leaked to the public.

Big screen, lots of power and a sophisticated design - but what's the difference between the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S7?

Design

The design of the Samsung Galaxy S8 is not drastically different from the Galaxy S7, both smarts have a metal frame and a glass end. The S8 is longer - but not wider - and measures 148.90 x 68 x 8 mm compared to the S7, which measures 142.4 x 69.6 x 7.9 mm. Also, the new phone looks a little different from the front because it doesn’t have a main HOME button just below the screen, it’s replaced with a fingerprint scanner. The only thing left unchanged is resistance to water and dust. Both the S7 and S8 are IP68 certified, which means the phone can stay up to 30 minutes at a depth of 1.5 meters.

Screen

The screen of the new smartphone is larger than the S7 - even 5.8 inches (S7 5.1 inches). The resolution has also been improved to 1.440 x 2.960 QHD +, compared to the S7's 1.440 x 2.560 QHD. Although the screen is larger than its predecessors, its display ratio is 18.5: 9, which makes it similar to the LG G6. Probably the only technology that hasn’t changed is the Super AMOLED screens in both the S8 and S7, which deliver brighter colors.

OS and power

Of course, both models have the Android operating system installed, but the Galaxy S8 is released with the AndroidNougat version, while the Galaxy S7 cannot be upgraded to this version. In other respects, we will not see any significant differences on the OS front. In terms of power, there are significant changes, but smaller than the typical annual changes in power increase. The Samsung Galaxy S7 has 4GB of RAM and either an eight-core Exynos 8890 processor (in Europe) or a quad-core Snapdragon 820 (in the US) and both are among the most powerful in 2016. The Samsung Galaxy S8 still lags behind 4GB of RAM and an eight-core processor, but it has not yet been confirmed exactly what processor it uses. The Exynos 8895 is expected to be used in Europe and the Snapdragon 835 in the US. Including the fact that the Galaxy S7 gives us an almost flawless performance, it probably won’t make much of a difference.

Camera

The camera, in the S8 upgrades, is probably the smallest change compared to the S7. The only differences are that while the rear camera remains the same - 12 MP, the front instead of the S7 5 MP camera has changed to 8 MP. Unfortunately, it is not yet known how much the number of megapixels will affect the quality.

Battery

The battery in the new S8 is a bit worrying as it has the same capacity as the S7 at 3,000 mAh, but will need to keep a much larger screen with more pixels. On the other hand, the phone will have a more powerful processor that should compensate for the lack of power. Another innovation that will force the purchase of new cables, the S8 changes the connector to USB Type-C.

Price

Samsung has not yet officially confirmed the price of the new Samsung Galaxy S8, but if you believe the rumors, it will be a little more expensive than the S7. In 2016, the Galaxy S7 started at around $ 750 / £ 569 / AU $ 1149 and is currently available for around $ 670 / £ 450 / AU $ 900, while the Samsung Galaxy S8 can cost around $ 845 / £ 695 / AU $ 1,115, which is $ 100 / £ 130 more expensive.

Summary

The Samsung Galaxy S8 looks set to be a big improvement over the S7 model - it’s much bigger, but there won’t be a massive, new display ratio, HDR support will give it a really new feel. On the other hand, the camera has remained almost the same, just as battery power is not the best news, which is compounded by the fact that the price of the phone is going up. Not everyone may like a fingerprint sensor either. All in all, the Samsung Galaxy S8 will be a really nice smartphone for the buyer, but if you don’t want to spend too much, the Samsung Galaxy S7 is also one of the best choices.
